It may not look like a tough sport when you watch a game, it all seems very gentile at the crease, but under the padding England’s best cricketers are top athletes with all the stress and strains that places on the body and mind.
One of my first real opportunities as a sports massage student come in the form of working at Durham County Cricket Club towards the end of the 2013 season. They needed to win their last few games to claim the championship so the pressure was on. That pressure translates directly to the sports massage therapist as you are, for a time, put in charge of their body, mind and injuries. Its a time to apply everything you have learnt and not make mistakes!
I had the huge honor of working with the players Chris Rushworth, Callum Thorp, and captain Paul Collingwood. Without giving away all then details its enough to say I was in awe of what they put their bodies through, how many injuries they sustain and recover from over the years and how much you can learn from them about muscles and performance.
What a great experience it was to work with the team under the watchful eye of their chief massage therapist Amy Woolstenholmes.
The team went on to be crowned 2013 Champions!
